The Native Northeast Portal

A major goal of the Native Northeast Research Collaborative's scholarly editing portal is to create a vibrant, dynamic resource of immediate and continuing relevance to researchers, Native American tribal members, educators, students, and members of the public.  The resulting digital scholarly editing resource and web site provides visual and intellectual access to significant historical knowledge for the purposes of scholarly research, teaching, tribal projects, and for lifelong learning.

Editorial Methodology 

In order provide reliable visual and intellectual access to primary source materials written for, about, and by Native people(s) in the Atlantic Northeast,  the Staff of the Native Northeast Research Collaborative uses traditional scholarly editing methods of selection, organization, digitization, transcriptions, and annotation.  The resulting digital heritage items are then presented in a robust digital publication platform developed especially for reviewing and sharing Native American cultural materials in a ethical and professional way.

Mukurtu CMS

Mukurtu CMS has been adopted by dozens of Indigenous communities across the world. It allows communities to easily manage digital heritage content in a culturally appropriate way. Mukutu CMS provides:
​

• A safe, secure, free and open source platform for managing digital cultural heritage materials online and offline;
• Local cultural protocols to provide granular access parameters for digital heritage content;
• Flexible templates that adapt to various indigenous stakeholder needs;
• Traditional knowledge fields customizable for curating content alongside standard Dublin Core metadata fields;
• An innovative set of Traditional Knowledge labels that work with traditional copyright and Creative Commons licenses to better serve Indigenous needs
